Surprises at my front door

Dear Max is quite concerned about this guest at our front door.
The crane has stayed here for several hours now despite Max's response.

The other surprise at my door was my newest book arrival!

I am so pleased with the quality of my images, the binding and the cover!

Putting on the miles

Friday night I went with Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson to her opening in Sarasota at the Katharine Butler Gallery. She never ceases to amaze me! You must see the skirt she made of her art, she's wearing it in this post on her blog. Now how incredible is that!! I so enjoy the artists and the staff at KBG. Ruth Hook Colby and I chatted about pastels and art business for a while! The art walk brings out the child in me as I weave in and out through the galleries seeing art friends like Jini Mount whose wonderful sculpture and spirit fill her Celery Barn Gallery, which is where I had once enjoyed a workshop weekend with Judith Carducci. Some new artists were in Towles Court but I was so glad to see Meg Pierce still has her studio. I find her collaged mandalas to be skillfully created and intriguing.
The previous night was 3rd Thursday where I was invited to the opening of my friend Donna Dowless, who is the heart artist and the official Ambassador of Love in Orlando. I also surprised my friend Cheri Reichers at her opening at The Gallery at Avalon Island. There was a nice crowd of artsy friends downtown and I ran into Roland Pasquale who I'd met with Josh Garrick at an art marketing event on the coast.

I have been keeping busy, oddly waking up at 4:30 am and painting. Juxtapose Gallery has added Elizabeth and me to their website and there's lots of excitement going on there in New Jersey this week. If you stop in tell Geri that Robin sent you. This coming Friday is the opening bash for Chrome and Leather at the Museum of Florida Art in Deland where "Many the Miles" above, will be featured.

Steam

Fittingly titled "Steam" the 18" x 24" canvas is filled with acrylic and a little bit of pencil and pastel. I am looking for the right words to express the emotion I feel in this turning point in both aspects of creating and in the appearance of this work. Perhaps free? And contented. You can gain some perspective into my art world with a quick glance at some pieces circa 1990 - 2000 or some of my portraits. Detail oriented, realistic, even the skies and animals in Melting Pot depict a picturesque world. More recent landscapes have been a bit more expressive, and color saturated. Over the past year I have implemented more design elements into my new work. I have expanded into acrylic and mixed media to meet personal, and practical needs like ease of shipping and glassless framing. Drawn to cuisine and culinary presentations I have snapped pictures of food around the world since I was a teen. Last year I dramatically changed my lifestyle to mainly vegetarian. I find the colors and essence of the foods appealing, so much that I find myself drawing and painting plates, cups....breakfast, lunch and dinner. I do not feel a departure from my skies, landscapes and portraits. Stay tuned as I continue to capture what brings me joy. Thanks for joining me on my Visual Journey.

Charleston South Carolina

Valentine's Day weekend in Charleston South Carolina was more than charming! Here's a handful of some highlights on my trip amidst the numerous art, food, entertainment and historical establishments.

Lowcountry Painter Susan Trott
Braving the drizzle at Battery Park solo at a COPA(Charleston Outdoor Painters) destination.

This basket weaver's shop caught my artist's eye for pattern in The Market which was once a place where slaves were traded. Slaves may not openly be traded in America any longer yet this is still happening in our world today. I feel so strongly about making a difference that one of my charities is the International Justice Mission who fight against Human trafficking. BTW Have you seen the movie Taken?

At The Market I met artist Nina Uccello whose whimsical art caught my heart. She herself is delightful, I felt a bond with her and so of course I had to have a piece of her art. I bought this print which brings me joy! (the original was unavailable)

There's a few lessons in that story.

I also bought photography from Norm Lambert. In memory of my trip a rod iron heart in front of a red door with the number 8.

I explored the Gibbes Museum of Art (use this link) I can't say enough about that fabulous museum! A wonderful mix of historical and contemporary art in a wide array of mediums which included woman artists! As a former board member for the National Women's Caucus for Art I uphold the goals for equality which have been fought for by our predecessors throughout history. I wish to recognize and thank the executive diredtor and chief curator Angela D. Mack and associate curator Sara C. Arnold on a masterpiece of a Museum! Works by artist Alice Ravenel Huger Smith repeatedly pulled me in for a close look.(and we thought our names were long huh Elizabeth?) I encourage you to explore their excellent site and invite you to dialogue.

See there's so much! Here are two of a number of college sailing teams going out to compete in a race we witnessed at the Yorktown at Patriots Point. We went to the beach, visited churches, cemeteries, historical sites, incredible architecure and the french quarter, gallery after gallery and here are two of my favorite restaurants. Tristan where I had the most phenomenal service of my entire life. If I could only replicate the divine food Chef Aaron prepared! On Valentine's Day we dined at Magnolia's which was out of this world!

Two Abstracts by Robin Maria Pedrero

Two abstracts @ just $25 each

Two Awards

I received two awards this week from artists Elizabeth St. Hilaire-Nelson and Linda Mahoney. Thank you. Awards feel good to receive. I had been juggling too many things and had not responded to some recent blog awards or games. I apologize for not responding if I missed yours. Admittedly I can't keep up. I believe in supporting, encouraging, and recognizing others for their gifts, and accomplishments. Both are artists I admire greatly and if you are not following I suggest you hop on board the train for a creative ride!Linda asks to list what I love quickly here goes, when my dog is romping after a squirrel he looks like a rabbitt!(that just happened so I blurted it out) a clean house (ahhh), the wind, color, friends and family, being an artist and being with artists or art, and finally creation in the larger sense of life and that being the greatest gift that as an artist I too can create.

I in turn award these artists who are asked to say what they love and then give art blog awards.

Celebrity in the studio!

"Good things come to those who wait" crosses my mind as I reflect on meeting entrepreneur Kimberanna and musician Sean Dennison. Let's start at the beginning. Kim and I became acquainted via twitter several weeks ago. She asked to see my studio prior to interviewing me for an article on Kimberanna.com. I am ready with coffee, teas, fruits and a tidy studio at 11 am for her 1:30 appointment with me. She communicates with me via twitter and text messages of her amazing day filled with mini detours such as delivering blankets to the homeless, helping to host auditions for Orlando Star Talent, and while with professional singer Sean Dennison they were "mobbed by girls" delaying them further so at 4 pm I began to wonder if the joke was on me. She apologizes profusely saying she has a surprise for me and asks if I like music and they just had to pick up a guitar. I googled Sean and found him easily and listened to several songs, instantly falling for "I Know". This is the myspace page where you can listen too. (Be aware this link goes to myspace where if you scroll down you will see pics from people commenting leaving not much to the imagination) We spent time in my studio and quickly began sharing from the heart. One characteristic I really like about Kim is her ability to target in and call it like it is. Even in observing things like my living room decor, where visions of two beach experiences came together she blurted out South Beach meets Cape Cod, which was exactly what we did! She is keen, sharp quite fashionable and beautiful inside and out. Sean brought his own kind of magic. His celebrity doesn't hinder his genuine character from shining through. I admire his courage and strength in recovering from disabling injuries from flying off a bridge in a car. He is a songwriter and musician whose personal experiences resonate with listeners universally. First he performed "I know" right in my very own living room on my little ol' Ikea red hassock! Incredible! We spoke in depth of looking at the big picture of life, of creation, how struggles impact our lives and supernatural living. Before leaving he performed another song which he allowed me to video. What a fabulous visit - no joke!

Studio Floor

Although I am in Florida it's chilly with frost outside and my floor is icy. This blanket which I often use to lie prone for long meditative prayer time is where I am planting myself. Here is where I am playing with my new fun medium of acrylic which after struggling with it for months, and even further back years where I just didn't get it, I am now enjoying it. I had a breakthrough yesterday just before leaving for OMA's 1st Thursday, which by the way was GRAND! Like anything else worth doing, practice gains skill and play leads to adventure. I can imagine those of you who work in acrylic are thinking what's all the fuss about. I will tell you although I am proficient in pastels and relish the medium I have been seeking an alternative which is easy to ship without glass. Another is ease of working larger, which often I use oil, my trained medium, but I am favor fewer of toxins. And lastly the glazing makes me giddy!

Preview and Upcoming Events

I am just so excited about this piece! Not even framed yet I brought it in to COMMA Gallery for a sneak peak to share with the curators. It is for the future Cattle exhibit. This is one of those pieces that received a positive response from even the toughest critics, my family.

Central Florida has an effervescent flow of arts and culture events this weekend, Mount Dora Fest, Richard Colvin at the University Club, Elton Bracey at OMA, Arts Fest.... Saturday and Sunday is filled with art, dance and cultural performances at MAC. I have a new pastel in the MAC Members Exhibit.

"Chrome and Leather VI — A Motorcycle as Art
exhibit
For those of us who want to mix a little "fun" with our culture
(admit it — we all do), there is a Fine Art Opening held each year at the Museum
of Florida Art in DeLand that has over the years also become a "legendary"
party. Up there in DeLand, where (motorcycle) life on the road is taken very
seriously, Bike Week 2009 will begin with an artistic roar with the 6th Annual
Art of Chrome & Leather exhibit, this year called "Art on the Road of Good
and Evil."

The Art of Chrome & Leather Bash, which opens this exhibit with a motorcycle theme, will be held Friday, Feb. 27, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the museum. The exhibit will run through March 22. This year is special because the exhibit will feature many Central Florida artists including Doug Rhodehamel, Donna Frank, Keith Theriot, Liz Kitchens, Dan Colonna, Andrew White, Brigan Gresh, Dawn Rosendahl, Cheryl Turner, Toni Taylor, and Robin Maria Pedrero among many others. There will also be a showcase of some of the country's top bikes as painted by Florida's airbrush genius Chris Cruz. The variety of artwork shown at the Museum truly represents our country's fascination with the "life on the road," and the exhibit is suitable for families.

Why you want to go: And then there's this party! Not
only does the party open the exhibit, but it serves as the one time when the
"art crowd" gets to break out their "creative leather and black tie" and mix it
up with the bikers who descend on Central Florida at this time each year. Not
only will attendees be the first to see the exhibit, but the "Bash" will feature
art by Perego, including an action mural painting and organic light show with
live models. The Bash features live music, biker fashion, food and drink, in
addition to a live auction. Everyone is encouraged to wear their best "biker
gear." Tickets are $35. The Museum of Florida Art is located at 600 N. Woodland
Blvd. in DeLand, Fla. Regular daily admission is $3. (Sundays are free).

New Look

Recently while walking with Elizabeth I learned some graphic marketing tips, and then this morning in a subscription email from SmARTist career blog a suggestion to avoid what I was guilty of led me to spend a full day changing my website and blog. I became so absorbed I forgot about lunch, and when I remembered I then burned my ginger veggie rice patty! And Max poor boy dog, didn't have much fun. In fact he did something he has never done. He stole a paintbrush I had on the floor and ran outside! I have had my fill of web design for the day and will go back in to check it out and open Front Page at a later time. It is not a one day task. Above is a long narrow abstract, one of those that I have been mentioning on facebook and twitter. I personally prefer it standing tall, lap top users turn it sideways...whadya think?

Sound the trumpet

This past weekend we went to the Hoggetown Medieval Faire in Gainesville Florida. I adore the grand display of garb not only by performers but also faire goers! I also take great delight in the MUSIC! My son bought a didgeridoo, a wind instrument of the Aborigines of northern Australia. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet , which he plays. There were handcrafted instruments in numerous tents and a band, pipes, drums and all that had played at the Scottish Fest performed here too! One of the the highlights of the journey for me was capturing some more farm footage as we drove through rural Florida. I am so excited to continue with my farms series. Meet "Blue"!
