Art and Fear

I have been teaching art and mini art business workshops individually and in small groups. Recently while working with artist Kaye Hanna in discussion of our work as artists she shared that she sees an on going thread throughout my work regardless of medium or genre. I liked hearing that from her. She graciously let me borrow a book I'd been wanting to read "Art and Fear" by David Bayless and Ted Orland. This book has become something of an underground classic, shared through word of mouth. It's one of those books like having a conversation with artist friends. Serendipitously the words pulled pieces of floating truths together for me. You who come here often share in my visual journey, my inspirations, and the work I am called to do. Thanks for being here. I appreciate that you keep coming back.

Above is a pendant necklace I created shown on a level of one of my sculpture assemblages. The pendant and more of the unfinished sculpture views can be seen here in my Etsy shop.

Oil in the studio

I was dancing in the studio today in delight from a full day with no other commitments but to paint. So I began finishing up and creating layers on some pieces in oil. Here is a shot of Moon and a few other pieces on the floor, too wet to take proper photos. I went to town on landscapes, cows and nudes. I kept the windows open and the fan circulating all day. Moon who does speak English but will be taking a class to help her speak more fluently expressed how she really was impressed at the detail in the painting. She was struck at how good the jacket and herself look on that color background. I am pleased but see a few things I need to go back in and solve. Painters, artists, we are problem solvers - didn't cha know?

Art on the Road of Good and Evil

During Josh Garrick's curatorial art talk at the Museum of Florida Art in DeLand for Chrome and Leather, Art on the Road of Good and Evil I became acutely aware that my work is exhibited in quite fine company. Camera legend Terry O’Neill has been capturing the world’s royals, celebrities, models and politicians for almost 50 years. His life sized piece is of Martha Stewart seen astride a motorcycle. Renowned airbrush bike artist Chris Cruz's creations are on actual motorcycles and part of the exhibit. There were art installations, visual and performance art, conceptual and interactive pieces. Garrick spoke of the internationally acclaimed artists and local artists selected, sharing stories behind the work and the artists. I was honored when he came to my work and I was in the moment and can retell a particular part of what he said, "of Art on the Road of Good and Evil this is THE GOOD."

Curator’s statement
The Art of Chrome and Leather 2009

"The fact that you are viewing original works by over 50 artists – over half of whom are women – speaks volumes about our country’s fascination with ‘life on the road.’ Almost every work of art in the Museum today was created specifically for this exhibit – a tribute to these magnificent machines and the people who ride them. ....This exhibit is about shared joy – joy in the ‘life on the road,’ and the joy of creating images that help us see that life in a new, more personal way."

The exhibit at The Museum of Florida Art concludes March 22, 2009.

A slice of my life

Here's a store front view of Wolfes Gallery in DeLand Florida, where I delivered more art work to on Friday. The "Slice" is a cute little piece created in acrylic, in a black chunky frame. I just like little pieces in chunky frames! Here is a slightly blurry shot of my 3 new acrylics inside the eclectic, aromatic gallery. I spent several hours enjoying some vanilla cinnamon coffee straight up too, while people from all over the world came in and purchased art! An Irish couple who I had to listen to very intently to make sure I understood actually came from the Isle of Man and took home some great memories. People traveling were selecting works for decorating and others coming in for the perfect gifts. I was impressed.

The other cool thing is that Kim Dean and I had our first official Tweetup! A tweetup is a twitter term for when you meet up with a twitter friend in real life. She's a cutting edge artist, and the food was not our main issue at lunch, it was art talk! She surprised me with a very special act. She brought me a gift of her art! I was flabbergasted! Look she gave me a necklace like this, see here in her Etsy shop . I am so touched by her kindness and her art! She also made some rockin KEDS! http://www.zazzle.com/piece_of_my_heart_shoes-167856682371415174

Untitled #4 pastel abstract by Robin Maria Pedrero

Untitled # 4 pastel 27" x 20" Robin Maria Pedrero
This is a recent piece. I am still tempted to place a bird in the mid to lower left, why? Just because. Isn't that one of the most wonderful aspects of art, "just because". I have several acrylics in the works with birds, like the ones I just brought to the Wolfe Gallery in Deland Florida. These more abstract pieces are like maps. I was my father's co-pilot "map reader" on many trips as we drove the east coast from Connecticut to Florida. I have always liked maps. There's comfort, power and adventure in the knowledge they provide. I also like taking new paths and adventure, not like cliff diving but more on taking in all that my senses can absorb. I believe it is not just a part of my nature to do so, but my job as an artist. To go, to be sent, then to respond, and share the work.

Orchid Sky arises in the Spring

"Orchid Sky"
Artist: Robin Maria Pedrero
Dimensions: 24" x 24"
Medium: acrylic on 1/4" thick wood panel
This work is available unframed. I can frame it for you if you request.
Available here in my 1000 markets shop

This piece is created from life experience, it is not a particular place. It is an emotive landscape, where I use color to express feeling. I began work on this piece in October of 2008. I finished it just this week. It evolved through several stages of indecision. I let outside thoughts creep in and was personally dissatisfied so I set out to satisfy myself in the work made the changes and I am feeling filled with contentment. Interesting that it emerged complete, now during the onset of Spring. When I look at this piece I almost forget that I painted it.

Collector Story

Max is here to keep you company while you read. A curator phoned me to participate as a working artist for the Providence Academy Fundraiser. Once I committed with a yes, I recognized the name of the contact as someone on my mailing list. After corresponding she mentioned she was an art collector of mine. I was frustrated with myself and a little embarrassed as I did not have her in my database as a collector and did not even know what piece of mine she owned. She invited me to speak to the students about being an artist. I presented my art, and talked to middleschoolers, then high schoolers and lastly elementary students. While there she brought out the piece of work and I instantly remembered! She and her business partner had purchased it while at a gallery in Kissimmee Florida, as a signature piece for a school! Along the line the women's contact info had changed. Even with my database of Working Artist if I loose contact then both me and my collectors miss opportunities! Speaking of opportunities, if you buy art from me today 50% goes to The Providence Academy.

You are invited to

Masked art collector

The face of my art collector is masked shown here in my home studio this week. The last time I saw her is when I delivered work to one of her condos. She scheduled an appointment with me to buy a copy of my book, spend time together and see my new work before she moves out west. I have been reflecting on how I adore my friendships with my collectors. I often try to analyze seeking common threads among them yet I find them all to be so unique, interesting individuals and couples. This collector shared her deductions on the art market from research in the Wall Street journal and Sothebys. She, just like you, has watched my body of work evolve. She has seven Pedrero pieces and purchased gift pieces over the course of seven years. They vary in size, subject and style. Her acquisitions have always surprised me. If I were to profile attraction or prequalify a potential collector through a filter of a particular style it would be my loss to assume even if I know their taste. I write these words to myself for advice as with the exception of portraits I travel into a less representational world. The faces of my collectors are masked as more of my sales happen here online, there aren't always profile pictures! Yet the stories continue of what about my art they desired, that pulled on their heart strings and they clicked buy. There is such contentment in the transaction for both buyer and seller. Which reminds me there's another story to tell...in my next post.

Wolfe Gallery represents Robin Maria Pedrero

"Juicy Thoughts" is one of my new acrylic pieces selected by the Wolfe Gallery. The gallery is located in historic downtown Deland Florida which provides an old school shopping experience in a quaint downtown environment. There are many choices of restaurants and entertainment spots. Incorporated in 1882, the City of Deland is home to Stetson University , and the Museum of Florida Art , just 20 minutes from Daytona Beach and 30 minutes from Orlando. Once inside the gallery your senses are greeted by color and the aroma of coffees and teas served daily. My friend Cheri Reichers has been represented there since John Wolfe had founded the gallery. You will be surprised by works of mine not yet seen here, fresh from the studio as of this very morning! You might recognize a few like "Steam" , Walking In, and Amethyst Golden Aria.
